We do many
things in life yet at some point of time we seem to have reached
a place which we never ever dreamt about. Beautiful dreams
of our life passed our minds towards the end of our college
days and also at the time of our marriage. But what happened
to all those images of a bright future.
Well
you see, we are where we are in life today, simply because
of the decisions that we took earlier in life. When life challenged
you, you decided on a few things. When life looked up good
on you, you decided on a few things. How quickly, correctly
you judged the situation and decided and quickly and effetively
you acted upon that decision ensured that you reached where
you are in life now.
You also have a lot of knowledge on how the world works and
you also know a lot about self development, yet that missing
link is - well still missing!
Mentoring is all about having an extra sense and an extra
mind. A mentor gives you clarity from the outside. It is all
about learning how to achieve a set target by using a specific
coordinates of commands. And then it is about learning to
achieve more targest with the same specific coordinates of
commands. Setting off a chain reaction. When that happens
you have begun to succeed. You have begun to climb the ladder
of life.
Mentoring is a process which is long and result oriented.
It calls for a lot of changes in the disciplines we have in
our life. Identifying the small stories that we tell ourselves
all the time, not knowing that we are sabotaging our future
by believing them.
Mentoring is looking far ahead. Setting goals in all the
important areas of life and then working towards them with
set principles, disciplines and determination.
Now why do we need a mentor?
First, a mentor can give us
perspective. Often, in business and in relationships we are
too close to see things objectively. We are caught up in the
emotions of the situation—the fear, the excitement, the
wonder, the anxiety, the confusion, the overwhelm.
A mentor is detached and can see things from a distance. Experience
plus time equals wisdom. A mentor can give us the wisdom of
a lifetime of experience.
Second, a mentor can give us
proficiency. Ever so often it happens that we get into our
business so deeply that we forget to equip ourselves with
the latest that is happening in the market. What with research
and development in all areas happening at a breakneck speed.
A mentor fills in the gaps of our temporary ignorance. In
mastering any new task, an experienced mentor can simplify
the process, guide us through the complicated parts, help
us avoid the pitfalls, and warn us about the dangers. In short,
a mentor helps us avoid the school of hard knocks—the most
expensive kind of education in terms of time, money, and emotional
pain. A mentor gives us a shortcut.
Third, a mentor gives us patience.
In learning any new skill, there is a learning curve. A mentor
can teach us patience as we struggle through failures to achieve
mastery.
